The benefits of learning the times tables

  • They help children work out a variety of mathematical calculations easily and quickly
  • Learning the times tables will give a child a solid foundation in mathematics that will help them through all stages of their education and life
  • Times tables are needed to solve word problems
  • Mathematics framework – KS1 Recall multiplication facts and division facts for 2, 5 and 10 and use them to solve simple problems
  • Children are regularly tested at school and schools will start to trial times tables checks in year 4 pupils from 2018. At this stage they should be able to recall the multiplication tables up to and including 12×12
  • Understanding fractions and fractions of numbers requires knowledge and understanding of times tables
  • The quicker the recall of times tables, the easier it is to solve word problems
  • Knowing the times tables gives building blocks for higher learning, such as long multiplication, long division, fractions and algebra
